diggin's Fired bullets is an item I generally don't photograph. I've been diggin' the last couple, 3 days & here's a few bullets I wanted to share. All are 0.577 caliber bullets & the paper match is included for size comparison. Extreme right is a CS Gardner bullet, flattened. The next over is a Williams cleaner, M&M 540, so flatten that the pedestal, the cleaning device is attached to, pierced the bullet's nose, the next is a mushroomed 3 ringer (high impact) & the far left is a very unique 3 ring bullet...hard to adequately derscribe. The very tip of the bullet's nose is now extented pasted thru the base of the bullet's skirt. (see top left photo)...a very flattened bullet. All dug from the foothills of NE Tenn this early March 2011. Out on 3/8 & saw several wildflowers coming up thru the forest floor...its time for spring.

The first ring is a slight high base ring & the nose is very rounded. The cavity is a pointed conical type. About 0.575 x 0.925 inches. Dug from the North Georgia area.

My guess because of soil conditions much of the white patina did not form on this bullet.

TL2962 sale pending For your consideration one 1863 confederate $10 bill. The paper still has some of its original crsipness. This bill appears to be hand cut. The front & back both have great detail & the blue colour on the bill's back is better than my photo shows. The front has a red MAY, 1863 vertically stamped on the bill. The bill is hand signed twice in brown ink & there is a faint red ink serial number, I think, hand signed on the front...look directly below CONFEDERATE. sold I wanted to do an update on a relic that has been on TennesseeLead for sometime now. I bought & sold this bell as a civil war calvary bell...being listed in the Lord's Vol.3 Collectors Encyclopedia as such. But there is much more to the history of this bell. These 4 inch bells were originally used in the US Camel Corps formed in 1855. At least 30 of these animals were brought to the US from the Middle East. The camels were used as transportation/pack animals on the uneven trails from Texas to Califorina & were perfectly suited for this rough, dry terrain. The bells were of great help locating camels that had wondered off. The bells worked so well that the idea & some of the bells saw service during the civil war. I had advertised this bell with a very clear, distinctive ring & well come to find out silver was cast in with the brass which did create an original, very clear ring. The gent who bought this bell told me he had 3 others just like this one but this bell had the best ring. So there you go...the other side of the story.

The cavity is a pointed conical type. The cavity has traces of gunpowder in it. About 0.575 x 1.115 inches. Dug from the Antietam, MD area. $24.00
TL2865

For your consideration one unlisted "odd" 3 ring minie'ball....an interesting bullet. You will find this bullet to be in very good dropped condition. My guess this is a salvaged lead bullet with areas of lite white & black equally mixed in with each other...I do not see a single patina chip. The 3 rings are faint, very shallow cast, especially the bottom one. Please notice the nose cast mark is clear & easy to see & mold seams can be seen on both sides of this bullet. The cavity is a deep ogival/paraboloidal type with a small teat at the base of the cavity...its hard to see in my photo but its there. About 0.575 x 0.97 inches. Dug from the North Georgia area.

Except for the lack of a 4th ring this bullet is pretty much a dead on match to a M&M #373 bullet. I guess a M&M #369 variant also.

Please notice the blunt cut nose. This bullet is not suppose to have a blunt nose...the nose appears to have been "hand-cut". I have seen Spencer cartridges dug that had hand cut blunt noses. Another bullet that's not suppose to have a blunt nose. Maybe some of the troops thought that a blunt nosed bullet had more stopping power? Maybe just a cut/boredom bullet?

For your consideration one Thomas & Thomas handbook #174B "Southern manufacture, cone cavity" 3 ring bullet. To my knowledge this is the only place this bullet is referenced. You will find this bullet to be in very good dropped condition. The patina is a brown colour & I do NOT see a single patina chip. The 3 rings are crisp & the nose is very rounded. The cavity is a cone type with a well formed pin & cone at the base of the cavity. Dug from one of CS General Breckinridge's NE Tenn camps...1864.

Over the years I have dug a few of these 174B bullets & about 1/3 of what you will dig has a pin N cone type cavity...that many times is a skirt cast bullet too. This is a trait I have noticed with other bullets...examples are M&M 399 & 593 bullets. Seems to be a common thread between some muzzle loading bullet varieties that are "normally" produced in a conical cavity with a few identical twins produced with a conical cavity with a pin N cone & the twin pin & cone examples are often skirt cast also?

This is where Pat Cleburne & 3 other confederate generals bodies where layed out after the battle...this site saw terrible carnage. Visiting Franklin for the first time was a double treat for me. The 1st was the Carter/Carnton Houses & the second was a chance brief meeting with Ed Bearss on this back porch as he guided a tour...his booming voice leading the way.

Question: Here's a little cuff/kepi I button dug here in NE Tenn probably back in the 1990's...off of a well drained slate ground hillside. The button is in excellent dug condition. I thought you would like to see a rarer confederate I button & I was hoping someone would be able to share some information on this, so far, hard to identify button. I have been told this is a British made button?? No backmark. Measures 0.50 inches across.

Answer: A Tice's CSI209As1 variant. C. ROWLEY without the backmark. Not listed in Tice's or Albert's books but I have now seen 2 of them. The style of I, slightly puffed back & there's other similarties. Thanks Colin.

Welcome to the banks of the Mississippi River extreme NW Tennessee. When you look across the river from here you see Missouri, not Arkansas. A Tenn State Park for Island #10 & its foritications. The confederate government knew one key factor in securing Southern independence was to control the Mississippi River. In 1862 seven US gunboats with mortar rafts bombarded this "tight double bend" in the river. Island 10 was located in the exact right place to fire on anything heading down river. By the time a gunboat reached Island #10 they were having to maneuver for the "double bend". Confederate gunners knew this & you can bet their guns were trained on this area of the river. After a 3 week bombardment, darkness & high river conditions 2 US boats slipped pass the island. Now them Yankees own down nearly ta Memphis. This is the first piece of the Mississippi River confederate forces had lost in conflict. The confederates evacuated the island, under fire, in pretty good order & were chased thru the swamps some 5 miles nearly to Tiptonville, Tenn. Here better than 6,000 CS troops were captured. A interesting civil war story...a little off the beaten path. Island #10 & fortications are now underwater.

My initial reaction while reading the records of this bombardment was "I wonder if anyone had done any shell hunting here"? Beautiful country but this is the most remote part of Tenn I have ever seen.

Welcome back to the banks of the Nolichucky river. The Earnest Fort house. Built by Henry Ernest (Heinrich Ernst) in 1782 in what was then "Indian Terriority" North Carolina, now extreme NE Tenn. Earnest served with the Virginia Militia in the French & Indian War & was loyal to the patriot cause during the American revolution. The 1st story of this home is built with thick limestone slabs & mortar. The 2nd & 3rd stories are built of notched logs & mortar complete with a 3 story limestone chimmney. There is not a window in either end of this home. One of the first toll bridges across this river was located here. This home is just down stream from the David Crockett birthplace. The Earnest family were large farmland holders & were also slave holders which is unusual for this part of Tenn. Not far from this site East Tennessee's own CS General "Mudwall" Jackson captured several Ohio troops in a skirmish over the E TN & VA RR. Jackson's troops would have moved thru this area before & after this engagement. This home has always been in private hands.

Welcome to the waters just off of Chicamacomico, North Carolina. This part of the Outer Banks is known for the first capture of a Federal vessel during the Civil War, October 1861. The Fanny was a small propellor-driven steam ship. Captured by CSS Curlew with help from CSS Junaluska & Raleigh, with union troops aboard. Pressed into service with the pesky Mosquitto Fleet she was used to protect coastal North Carolina. Ran aground & abandoned at the battle of Elizabeth City, NC as Burnside began his aggressive Carolina coastal campaign from Roanoke Island. The Fanny was also known as the first aircraft carrier. While in Union service, on the James River, a manned balloon made an ascent to observe nearby confederate forces. All "previous water-launched balloon flights had taken place from barges". The wreck of The Fanny was discovered in the 1980's & has since been excavated.

Not too far from this spot is the final resting place of the USS Mointor. I always remembered this ship as that funny looking tin can-boat that changed naval warfare forever. That revolving turrent bobbing around in the water firing bone crushing shots to ships of the day. Repeated & accurate shots. The Monitor was built buy a Swedish ship builder & she was much more adepth to river warfare than naval warfare. Her low seaboard & heavy turrent made the Monitor unseaworthy in rought waters. Well...in December 1862 in the famed Graveyard of the Atlantic she went down while in tow & still lies there. Experenced divers can make the 230 foot dive & view the wreckage in the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. This type of scantuary is the first of 14 which protects a marine "cultural resorce rather than a natural resorce".

Photo is of the Bodie Is lighthouse under repair.

Here's another one off the beaten path. Welcome to the banks of the Nolichucky River-State of Franklin-1786-birth site of David Crocket...now Greene Co. Tenn. Humble beginnings. Crocket's grandfather was killed by native Indians...his father was one of the Overmountain Men. During his very early years the most organized form of government Crocket knew was that of the Cherokee Indians. Rough, tough, ...ready to move in a minute. Joined the Tenn Militia & fought in the Indian Creek Wars. Two term Congressman from frontier Tennessee. Opposing fellow Tennessean Andrew Jackson's Indian removal policy helped defeat Crocket which, in anger, prompted one of his most famous orations you may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas. Crocket's death at the Alamo, like much of his life, is somewhat speculation. History offers more than one demise to Crocket...the one I like best is "Crocket's body was found surrounded by no less than 16 Mexican corpses, with Crocket's knife buried in one of them." Tennessee has since been known as the Volunteer State.

At the peak of the American Revolution the frontier milita Overmountain Men were mustered at Sycamore Shoals in prepration for the march & victory at the Battle of Kings Mtn. During the American Civil War this very area was used as a path to the Cumberland Gap for loyal union men wanting to enlist. Union pilots & bushwackers loved the geography of this area. Heading West take a left & you are in the flatlands/foot hills. Take a right & you are in the big mountains which travel there for the unprepared was at best hazardous. These mtns were also a natural boundry between the Confederacy in Virginia & many loyalist of NE Tenn. Sidenote.....the shoals on the Watuga River is an easy 1/2 mile walk behind Ft Watauga & is a great place to wade & fish.
To me Sycamore Shoals was one of those places that I have heard of but I didn't really know why?? By 1760 Carter Co Tenn had seen an influx of European settlers from the East. Here in 1772 early settlers established the Watauga Association which was one of the 1st constitutional governments West of the Appalachian Mountains.....this helped set a presentient for all lands West of this point. 1775 saw Daniel Boone help negotiate the Tready of Sycamore Shoals.....a land purchase of large portions of modern day Kentucky & Tenn. from the Cherokee Indian Nation. The following year Ft Watauga (shown) helped thwart an invasion during the Cherokee Wars. It was during these wars settlers like Nancy Ward & John Sevier made their marks on history.
